Old Crow
by Chet Marlett

Old Crow
Hung to the top of an old pine tree ,
Glinting at the expanse of the world,
Eye-balling creation.

Fragments of fire
Shot from his stare,
Scanning all of the earth -
Stripped bare by that momentary, frozen, clear insight
Darkly controlling the day.

An ancient wind warned, "Take care!"
"Beware,"
The awful power up there...

When, suddenly, by choice,
That so black voice
Screamed joyously to the sun;
And quickly flew
Into the blue
Of our only known fear.
Suddenly all that might
Dissolved like Night
Into the dream-darkening sky.

Deep within the pine,
Two woody eyes shine,
Without a sign of tension;
Their bark-shadow scars,
Flash out to the stars,
A look of comprehension.
